When You Should (and Shouldn't) Use Templates for Your Business
If you haven’t noticed yet, templates for businesses seem to be everywhere these days. Websites, social media, emails, landing pages, sales funnels, freebies…there’s probably a template for that. And, truth is, templates are great for lots of reasons! They can help with:
- Saving time, energy, and money
- Maintaining a consistent brand image
- Expanding your offers (Don’t have a freebie? Create one!)
- Growing your lists
- Nurturing your leads
- Driving conversions
- And so much more!
But, like with anything else, there are times when a templated approach isn’t always the best idea for your biz. So how do you decide? We’ve put together a list of when you should (and shouldn’t) use templates for your biz.
When you should use templates
You’re brand-new to web pages or email marketing
Starting a business on your own is intimidating AF. Not to mention launching everything else that comes along with it – your website, sales pages, forms, emails, social, and more. If you are new to, well, any of this, templates are an amazing way to start. They can help you create professional and well-designed assets – and get them launched fairly quickly – all while helping you learn along the way.
You’re not super tech-savvy
Websites require coding. Landing pages require coding. Emails require coding. You get where we’re going with this.
If you’re a one-woman-show, knowing how to do everything all at once can be really hard. Especially if this kind of stuff isn’t in your area of genius. The right templates will minimize the need for any technical skills on your end, helping you overcome those hurdles so you can get back to doing what you do best. Psst! You should also search for template-makers who provide tech support to help along the way.
You don’t need lots of customization
Adding layers of customization to any online asset can take a lot of extra time. Maybe your brand is still fresh and new. Or maybe you just need assets that are simple and straightforward. If you fall into either category, templates are the way to go.
However, customize where you can! Any chance you can include your unique brand elements – like colors, images, and logos – add them to make sure everything is consistent and on-brand.
You’re on a budget
Real talk: Templates cost less than developers or designers. Not to mention, a lot of templates come with lifetime access. That means you can use them over and over again and score access to any future or updated versions.
When you shouldn’t use templates
You need detailed customization
One of the biggest limitations to templates usually comes in the form of customization. Because they’re templated, there’s not a lot of room to create or add extra design elements to whatever you’re creating. So, make sure you double-check the level of customization before you commit.
They’re not mobile-friendly or optimized
Templates can be deceiving. They can look great in terms of design and customization, but how do they function? No matter what templates you’re searching for – web, email, sales funnels, whatever – you should always confirm that on the back end, they’re optimized and mobile-friendly. Otherwise, you’ll be doing a disservice to your audiences by hindering their online experience.
They’re not built for your current platforms
It’s a situation that can happen to anyone: You search for, find, and purchase the perfect template...only to find out that it’s not compatible with your CMS, launch platform, or email marketing tool. Big womp.
As you search for templates, make sure you’re looking for ones that are built for your platforms specifically. That will also help ensure they’re optimized and mobile-friendly. If that’s not the case, it’s best to skip them altogether.
